A scenic 21 mile linear walk across the Dark Peak from Edale to Penistone. The walk is split over 2 days, the first easy and the second harder. It involves a wildcamp at a lovely spot next to the pretty Abbey Brook. The venture starts at Edale railway station and finishes at Penistone railway station. The first day uses well defined paths and is reasonably easy. It calls in at the Derwent Dam where the ‘Dam Busters’ practised their bombing technique. The second day is over remote moorland, with much of it trackless and challenging. Good navigation is required. There are fine views of the Upper Derwent Valley from Howden Edge. The route visits Marjory Hill, the highest point in South Yorkshire, before dropping down to Langsett and following country lanes to Penistone.

Day 1 - Edale To Abbey By The Hagg
The day begins with a picturesque route along the Vale of Edale, before making an ascent and descent into the Snake valley. There is then another ascent and descent over the 'Hagg' to Fairholme where you can reward yourself for your effort with grub and drinks at the cafe. Afterwards, follow an easy walk along the edge of the Upper Derwent Reservoir before branching away on a gradual ascent up the Abbey Brook valley where the day finishes with a pretty and secluded wildcamp.
Day 2 - Cut Gate With Wind And Rain
The day starts with a steep climb from a wildcamp at the side of the pretty Abbey Brook. There follows a yomp across remote moorland, much of it trackless. The reward is a wonderful view down into the Upper Derwent Valley from Howden Edge (assuming it isn’t misty). The route calls in at Margery Hill, the highest point in South Yorkshire. The well trodden Cut Gate path is used as a descent off the moors to Langsett. From there it is a case of following country lanes to plod to Penistone railway station and the end of the walk.
