A wonderful 41 mile tour over some of the wildest and remote areas of the Dark Peak. The walk is split over 3 days and involves 2 wildcamps: the first on Margery Hill, the highest summit in South Yorkshire, the second on the dramatic plateau of Bleaklow. The walk starts and finishes at Penistone railway station and includes a total of 10 miles to reach the actual Derwent Watershed circuit. If you wanted to do the walk by parking your car at the Ladybower Viaduct, then the walk could potentially be done in 2 days and with a distance of around 30 miles.
This is a high level (for Peak District) and remote walk over challenging terrain. It offers some wonderful views from the various edges and visits interesting stone formations, such as the Wheel Stones. It passes the incredible landslip that caused the Alport Castles crag. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as Curlews, Kestrels and Mountain Hares. Overall, one of the best backpacks in the Dark Peak.

Day 1 - Penistone To Margery Hill
Starts at Penistone Railway Station and uses field-hops and country lanes to arrive at the Dark Peak moors. Climbs to the Derwent Watershed circuit via Near Cat Clough. Enjoys wonderful high level ‘edge’ views as the route makes its way over Outer Edge towards the Cut Gate path. Wildcamp at South Yorkshire’s highest point, Margery Hill (546m). Offers a good mix of field-hopping, lane walking and moor plodding.
Day 2 - Dry Derwent Valley Day
From a wildcamp on South Yorkshire’s highest point, Margery Hill (546m), the route follows Howden Edge with its dramatic views into Upper Derwent Valley. The walking gets easier as the route follows a well trodden path from Back Tor, along Derwent Edge. There are dramatic rock formations at Back Tor and the Wheel Stones. Drops down to the Ladybower Reservoir and crosses it using the viaduct. Field-hops its way on to the western ridge of the Derwent Watershed. Passes the incredible landslip of Alport Castles, before making its way over remote moorland to the Bleaklow plateau. Enjoy a remote wildcamp amongst Bleaklow Stones remarkable formations.
Day 3 - Head Of The Derwent Watershed
It’s a tough start to the day from the wildcamp at Bleaklow Stones. The terrain is trackless and boggy. It marginally gets easier over Featherbed Moss. At the top of Near Cat Clough, the Derwent Watershed circuit is completed. The walk then retraces the steps taken on the first day of this Venture to return to the Langsett area. Penistone Railway Station is reached by making use of an easy and interesting walking along the Trans Pennine Trail.
